Peyton McCollum had a game-high 14 points and Iowa thoroughly dominated Eastern Illinois 91-47 on Friday night in Iowa City.
The Hawkeyes shot 63.5% and made 14 of 30 shots from 3-point range, while the Panthers were held to 32.7% shooting overall and missed all seven of their 3-point attempts.
Iowa (2-0) outrebounded Eastern Illinois by 15 and had 25 assists on 33 made baskets. McCollum was 4-for-7 shooting from deep, Trey Thompson added 11 points and three 3-pointers and Tate Sage added 10 points.
Ty’reek Coleman made all five of his shots for 13 points and added six assists, and Trevin Jirak — a backup center in his second season with Iowa — had the most productive night of his career: eight points, seven rebounds and eight assists, the latter a personal best, in 21 minutes off the bench.
Twelve players scored in all for Iowa.
Tanner Vogel bundled 11 points with 11 rebounds to lead Eastern Illinois (0-2). Demar Burton scored nine points, including the first basket of the game, but Eastern Illinois would not lead again.
Jirak made a jump pass into the paint for Isaia Howard, who threw down a straightaway, two-handed jam at the 13:42 mark for a 20-10 Iowa lead.
After building that advantage through methodical basketball, the Hawkeyes ripped off a 15-0 run late in the half buoyed by two 3-pointers from Sage and a layup from Jirak. They led by as many as 23 in the half and hit the locker room up 41-20.
The highlight of an uncompetitive second half was a high-flying alley-oop dunk by Jaidyn Coon, assisted by Jirak from the top of the arc.
The Hawkeyes played to the final whistle, with Jacob Koch splashing a 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go after a quiet night (five points).
