Yegor Sharangovich scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Morgan Frost collected one goal and one assist to lead the host Calgary Flames a 3-2 victory over the high-flying Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
Matvei Gridin also scored for the Flames, who won for only the second time this season and the first time on home ice.
Goaltender Devin Cooley made 34 saves, a handful in the final minutes while the Hurricanes had their goalie pulled for the extra attacker.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jalen Chatfield replied for the Hurricanes, the defending Stanley Cup champions who had their winning streak snapped at seven games.
Goalie Brandon Bussi stopped 31 shots for Carolina, which had won five consecutive road games and arrived after playing Saturday night in Winnipeg.
Calgary controlled the bulk of the play in the final frame — the Flames had a 12-1 edge in shots in the first 10 minutes of the period — and were rewarded when Sharangovich converted a one-timer from the slot at 15:32 of the period for the winner.
Despite sitting at opposite ends of the standings, the clubs battled in a close and entertaining clash.
Kotkaniemi opened the scoring with his second goal in as many outings, pouncing on a rebound at 6:09 of the second period.
Gridin tied the clash with his first goal of the season. After the Flames survived a lengthy stretch of action in their end — defenseman Yan Kuznetsov’s shift was 3:13 — Gridin buried a top-shelf shot from the slot with 90 seconds remaining in the middle frame.
Frost, playing his 400th NHL game, gave Calgary the lead when he converted a tap-in tally set up by Zayne Parekh for the power-play goal with 20.9 seconds on the clock.
However, Chatfield tied the clash with a seeing-eye point shot with 4 seconds remaining in the second period — his first goal of the season.
Just before the warm-up, the Hurricanes announced forward Mark Jankowski, who had scored in six consecutive games, would miss the game due to a lower-body injury.
